Butler man sentenced to more than 5 years in jail for federal firearms charge
A Butler man was sentenced to serve five and a half years in prison for possessing a stolen firearm while serving a period of supervised release on a prior federal drug-trafficking conviction, United States Attorney Eric G. Olshan said Thursday, Jan. 4.
The prison sentence for Charlie Perkins, 29, will be followed by three years of supervised release, according to the news release.
The sentence was imposed by Senior United States District Judge Joy Flowers Conti, who before sentencing Perkins, also revoked his federal supervised release and sentenced him to six months in prison for the drug charges. The six-month term is to be served consecutively to the more than five-year term for the new firearm offense.
Perkins was charged after the Butler County Drug Task Force served a search warrant for his apartment in February 2023, according to court documents.
Olshan said Perkins ran from police and threw a gun at them, which was discovered to be fully loaded and registered as stolen.
This incident occurred when Perkins was on supervised release for a prior federal drug-trafficking conviction where he was charged with possessing cocaine and fentanyl, documents show.
