Knoch climbs out of late hole

Behind by six heading into the final frame Saturday afternoon, Knoch closed the boys basketball contest on a sizable run to beat host South Fayette, 66-62. The Knights (9-2) bucketed 14 of the game’s final 16 points, and three players put up double figures.

Jackson Bauman had a game-high 27 points for Knoch, Derek Lang 20, and Teegan Finucan 11.

North Catholic 60, Penn Hills 45 — Guided by Max Hurray’s 21 points, the Trojans put some distances between themselves and the Indians in the third quarter at this Saturday matchup, which was part of the Don Graham Classic.

Jude Rottmann added 12 for North Catholic (6-5) in the win. The Trojans will be back in action against WPIAL Section 2-4A foe Central Valley at home Tuesday night.

Mars 72, West Allegheny 42 — The Planets continued their hot streak from beyond the arc on the road Friday night, netting 11 three-pointers in this WPIAL Section 4-5A matchup.

Mars (7-4, 2-0) was led in scoring by Ryan Ceh’s 19 points. Austin Campbell chipped in with 12 and Ben Detisch had 8. The Planets play South Fayette at home Tuesday night.

Oil City 47, Slippery Rock 40 — Josh Book had a 20-point, 13-rebound double-double, but it wasn’t enough for the Rockets in this Friday night loss.

Freshman Lillian Hayden put up 11 points for Union/A-C Valley Friday night on the road at North Clarion, but the Falcon Knights bowed, 59-28.

Freeport 58, Riverview 42 — Morgan Croney totaled 18 points — including five treys — as the Yellowjackets won this Saturday afternoon home matchup. Jaden Gaillot had 10 points for Freeport (5-8, 1-3), which will be back in action against Derry Area on Thursday.

Wrestling

Knoch placed 6th in the 16-team Bo Wood Tournament at Indiana High School over the weekend, coming away with five varsity medals and another in the JV division.

Owen Layhew earned a tournament title in the 145-pound classification, while Miranda Lajevic placed thrird and Jarrett Crowe, Wyatt Foster, and Parker Anderson fourth in their respective classes.

Brady Carbungco was the runner-up in his JV division.
