Bernadette Smith

Smith

Bernadette Smith, 65, of Butler, passed peacefully at home surrounded by loved ones, on Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024.

She was born in Pittsburgh, on March 25, 1958, to Catherine (Cummings) Byrne and the late Charles Strehl.

Bernie graduated with her Associate of Applied Science in nursing from Butler County Community College in 1996, and worked at Butler Memorial Hospital for 25 years. She loved going to the beach, especially the Outer Banks; and had a love of music, from her teenage years in the folk group, that continued throughout her life, going to many concerts. She also loved socializing with friends and family, sitting on her front porch and dining out.

Bernie was known for her caring, loving, loyal and generous personality. She had an amazing gift of nurturing, ranging from her family and friends, to her patients and to anyone she came across. She changed so many lives by believing in people.

She was the mother of Zachary Smith; sister of Carol Tokar, Mary Catherine Martinka and Christine and Michael Strehl; and grandmother to her adored granddaughter, Nora Smith. She is also survived by a number of nieces and nephews, a great-niece and numerous great-nephews, and many close friends, both new and lifelong ones.

Bernie was preceded in death by her beloved son, Cyrus Smith; and siblings, Theresa Carrigan and Thomas Strehl.

SMITH — A memorial gathering for Bernadette Smith, who died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2024, will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, at the Lyndora American Legion Post 778, 150 Legion Memorial Lane.
