Haughey

Gregory P. Haughey, 82, of Butler, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, at his home.

Born July 14, 1941, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Paul G. and Elizabeth (Delehanty) Haughey.

He was a longtime employee of Mine Safety Appliance, Callery Chemical Companies and BASF in Evans City.

Greg was a 56-year member of Meridian Volunteer Fire Company, now Butler Township Fire District, where he served in multiple leadership roles including assistant chief and chief. He was a dedicated and influential figure in the emergency services of Butler County and beyond, creating a legacy of service, education and commitment to the safety of his community.

Greg was a cornerstone in the emergency medical services (EMS) community, serving as an instructor for emergency medical technician (EMT) classes. His passion for sharing knowledge extended to the realm of firefighting, where he excelled as a state accredited fire suppression instructor. Greg imparted the fundamentals and advanced tactics of firefighting to numerous firefighters through live fire structure fire training.

Drawing from his industrial background as a member of the BASF emergency response team, Greg was appointed by the County Commissioners to an advisory council on hazardous materials. This initiative paved the way for the establishment of the county hazmat team, a venture in which Greg played a pivotal role, serving as commander until 2008, and he continued to actively participate in the team's endeavors. As a charter member of the Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC), Greg contributed significantly to the transformation of the council. His dedication to hazmat instruction in the fire service set a standard for years to come, shaping the way emergency responders approached hazardous materials.

Greg’s commitment extended to the Butler County Fire Chiefs Association, where he was a life member. His leadership within the association culminated in his appointment as president from 2020 to 2022. He also served on the joint operating committee between the Butler County Fire Chiefs Association and Butler County Community College, playing a key role in managing the public safety training facility at BC3. His passion for teaching was evident in his efforts to bring fire safety education to the community. He took the BC3 public safety training trailer to elementary schools, engaging with third- and fourth-graders to instill the importance of fire prevention. His commitment extended to senior living facilities, where he continued to advocate for fire prevention.

One of Greg's most recent accomplishments was his contribution to the First Responder (LODD) Memorial in Alameda Park. His dedication to this memorial and to those who made the ultimate sacrifice as a first responder was unwavering until its completion.

A 2000 graduate of Leadership Butler County, Greg was also a volunteer for United Way, serving his employers as their campaign chairman and as a panel chairman for the United Way grant review committee. He led many United Way “Day of Caring” projects across the county.

Greg also served Butler Township as a former member of the planning commission and a current member of the zoning and hearing board. His legacy will live on in his teaching and he will be sorely missed by Butler County.

He was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church.

Surviving are his children, Mary (James) Miller, Joanne Bevan, Barbara (Michael) Mahoney, John (Janine) Haughey and James (Lori) Haughey; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and his dear friend, Eileen Nodge.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dolores (Zavacky) Haughey; his son, Paul; and two sisters, Donna and Molly.

HAUGHEY — Friends of Gregory P. Haughey, who died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2024, will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday, at St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church, 125 Buttercup Road, Meridian. Entombment will follow in the mausoleum of Calvary Cemetery, in Butler.

Memorial donations may be made in his honor to the Butler Township Fire District.
