Summit Township allocates income tax money to fire department
SUMMIT TWP — Supervisors voted Wednesday, Jan. 17, to give 25% of its earned income tax revenue from the fourth quarter of 2023 to Herman Volunteer Fire Company, an amount usually split between the company and Lick Hill Volunteer Fire Department.
Supervisor Larry Osche made a motion to give Herman the full amount. The township decided in December to remove Lick Hill from service in the township. Herman VFC will receive more than $16,000 from the township, which was collected from October to December.
“We already voted at a meeting that we would not give them any more financial aid period,” Osche said. “I don’t even know why there is a question.”
Mike Gallagher, solicitor for Summit Township, said the township has the right to distribute the money however the supervisors want.
Gallagher also said the township has filed an appeal on behalf of Summit and Center townships against the sale of the Butler Area Sewer Authority to Pennsylvania American Water.
Summit Township has BASA customers, but would not receive any money from the $230 million sale. Instead, the money will be split between Butler and Butler Township, following the payments of debts and liabilities.
Gallagher said the township supervisors don’t have to do anything else but wait for the judge to review the appeal.
“At this point, they can either grant the objections, dismiss the objections or just kick the objections back,” Gallagher said.
