SRU men overcome 14-point deficit, edge UPJ

JOHNSTOWN — Closing the game by hitting 24 of its final 38 field goal attempts, the Slippery Rock University men’s basketball team rallied from a 14-point deficit to defeat Pitt-Johnstown, 80-77, on the road Saturday afternoon.

Jomo Goings scored career-high 23 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out three assists for The Rock (7-9, 5-5). Maceo Austin contributed 21 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Luke Howes contributed 15 points and seven assists, Lashon Lindsey 12 points and five rebounds.

The game marked SRU’s first win on the road this season and its first at Pitt-Johnstown since 2013.

Andy Zuchelli led Pitt-Johnstown with 26 points.

Pitt-Johnstown 64, SRU (women) 42 — Regan Atkins scored a career-high 20 points for SRU, which slipped to 1-12 overall, 1-9 in PSAC play. The Rock sank all 12 of its free throws.

Deryn Moye scored eight points while Endya Robinson and Kaylin Venick contributed eight rebounds each.

Cassidy Crawford scored 11 points and Olivia Fasick 10 for the Mountain Cats (12-5, 7-4).

SRU hosts Clarion on Wednesday for women’s-men’s doubleheader. The women play at 5:30 p.m., the men at 7:30 p.m.
