Icy roads could hinder Tuesday morning commute
The rain expected to fall Tuesday, Jan. 23, in Butler County could turn to ice due to cold ground temperatures, according to the National Weather Service of Pittsburgh.
Meteorologist John Darnley said the precipitation sweeping in from the Great Lakes mixed with the warm front flowing from Tennessee has created a system of rain that will park over the Pittsburgh region, including Butler County.
“It’s 34 degrees,” he said. “That’s a good thing, actually. But the ground is pretty cold right now...(The rain) is freezing on contact.”
Just before 7 a.m., crews were seen on Main Street in Butler treating roads and sidewalks for the coming rain.
With temperatures expected to reach 39 degrees, Darnley said drivers should only be concerned about the commute in the early hours.
“It’s just the morning commute. If we get through this..I think once we get past 9 o’clock, it’s just going to be rain.”
Darnely said there’s an 80% chance of precipitation in Butler, but little to no ice accumulation predicted.
