Daughter to share father’s Holocaust experience

In observance of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, South Butler Community Library in Saxonburg is hosting a speaker at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 31, from the Holocaust Center of Pittsburgh.

Lee Goldman Kikel will tell her father's story of survival during the Holocaust gleaned from cassette tapes on which her father, Melvin Goldman, recorded his experiences in the 1970s. Most of his family was murdered during the Holocaust, and Goldman was unable to record his haunting journey until more than 30 years after World War II ended.

Kikel will discuss her father’s life, including growing up in Poland before German occupation to captivity in the ghetto and concentration camps to liberation, healing and moving to the U.S.

Attendees also will have the opportunity to paint butterflies for The Butterfly Project display being created at the library. Ceramic butterflies are a global memorial to the 1.5 million children killed in the Holocaust, as well as a tribute to survivors.

This presentation is appropriate for adults and children age 12 and older. Registration is preferred but not required by contacting the library at 724-352-4810 or director@southbutlerlibrary.org.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day was Saturday. Walk-ins will be welcome to attend the free event. Refreshments will be available.
