Pa. game commissioners table marten reintroduction plan
The Pennsylvania Board of Game Commissioners voted 6-3 to table plans to reintroduce the American marten species into the state.
One of the six to vote to table was Kristen Schnepp-Giger, the board’s representative from District 1, which includes Butler.
This puts on hold the Pennsylvania Game Commission’s long-term plans to reintroduce the American marten, a species driven out of the state by deforestation and fur trading.
While the plans were received positively by the general public, a survey of nearly 9,000 hunters revealed more mixed feelings from that population. Thirty-seven percent of hunters who responded supported the reintroduction plan, while 32% did not.
