Covert puts hat in ring for 11th District seat

Ryan Covert

Local business owner Ryan Covert is seeking the state representative seat in District 11, according to a candidacy announcement earlier this week.

Covert, an owner of Snack ‘N Pack and Butler Hot Dog Shoppe in Butler, will compete in the primary election on April 23 against incumbent Rep. Marci Mustello for the Republican nomination.

The two also competed for candidacy in the June 2020 primary election, when Mustello ultimately won the bid.

Covert said in the announcement he plans to advocate for fiscal responsibility in state and local government, reduction of government involvement in local business and parental involvement in education.

In addition, the release indicates Covert is a supporter of the anti-abortion movement and second amendment rights.

“We have too many people in government, like my opponent Marci Mustello, who have worked inside of government for too long, and so do not understand the real world challenges of creating jobs in their communities and paying bills with something other than your tax dollars,” Covert said. “I will change that when you elect me as state representative for the 11th District.”

Covert said he plans to listen to and support constituents within the district.

The announcement indicates Covert is a lifelong resident of the district and the son of a steelworker. In addition to running his businesses, he volunteers his time coaching and mentoring at-risk youths.

“(Covert) succeeds in all these things with his ‘never give up’ attitude. He will bring that same attitude to our state legislature,” the announcement said.

A campaign event called Snack N’ Sign was announced on Covert’s campaign Facebook page, “Ryan Covert for State Representative.”

The event will be held from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 3, at Snack ‘N Pack, 353 E. Jefferson St. The event includes refreshments and a chance to sign petitions to get local and national government candidates on the ballot.
