Miller Minutes

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

It’s nearly Groundhog Day, when a small rodent will determine our meteorological futures!

Having been to the celebration at Gobbler’s Knob, I know what it’s like to stamp your feet in anxious anticipation (or to prevent frostbite), stand shoulder to shoulder and drink hot cocoa with some of your newest acquaintances, all for the purpose of determining if there will be six more weeks of winter.

I’m not sure when we started taking advice from Phil, but I can tell you it always makes me chuckle because of that time my father, sister and I all trekked up the hill with a bus full of strangers.

If you haven’t made the trip to Gobbler’s Knob, I highly recommend bundling up, packing your car with friends, and making the journey. You’ll see women twirling fire batons, hear local musical artists, and even experience events in the town during the course of the day. Other Eagle reporters have seen it (and written about their experiences) and share the same sentiments I do.

Should those weekend plans be unfeasible, I’m sure you can find some event in the list following to enjoy!

The Moraine State Park Groundhog Day Hike is scheduled from 1 to 3 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2, in celebration of Pennsylvania’s favorite rodent. The hike is 2 miles and considered easy to moderate terrain, with plenty of opportunities to learn about the creatures along the trail. Meet up with the group half a mile from the South Shore office at the Pleasant Valley picnic area, 225 Pleasant Valley Road, Muddy Creek Township.

Brush off your improvisation skills and bring them to Hobnob Theatre Company’s studio on Main Street for First Friday’s Improv from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday. Purchase tickets on the theater’s website, hobnobtheatre.com.

Boogie to Batavia Studios production of “Grease” at Butler County Community College’s Succop Theater all weekend. The first performance is at 7 p.m. Friday. For tickets and more show times, visit batavia-studios.ticketleap.com.

Moraine State Park’s Winterfest starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at McDanel’s Boat Launch. The festivities include guided tours, horse-drawn wagon rides, music, prizes, demonstrations and more!

See the latest Keystone Opry concert featuring Canoe Ridge and The Cornbinders on Saturday. There are performances at 1 and 7 p.m. Tickets are $15 and are available at keystoneopry.com.

Purchase tickets in advance for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra’s next concert, “Romeo and Juliet,” which takes place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in the Butler Intermediate High School auditorium. Tickets are available in advance for $30 for adults and $10 for students and children when you visit butlersymphony.org/concerts/romeo-juliet.

The Intercollegiate Band Festival at Grove City College’s campus features college band musicians from 22 institutions and concludes with a concert at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $10 at the door of Ketler Auditorium in the Pew Fine Arts Center on campus.

Tune in Monday for the first episode of the Butler Eagle’s new weekly podcast — Alter Eagle, hosted by Laura Crago. Listen on apps like Apple, Spotify, Google and more, with each season exploring a different topic relevant to the region’s needs and interests.

Buy tickets for the Butler Little Theatre’s performance of “Constellations” premiering Feb. 16. Tickets are available on butlerlittletheatre.com.
