Beighley reaches 1,000 in KC hoop triumph

Taite Beighley became the 14th player in Karns City boys basketball history to reach the 1,000-point plateau Friday night as the Gremlins defeated Brookville, 75-60.

Beighley scored his 999th and 1,000th points on free throws in the third quarter. He finished the game with 18 points and has 1,003 points in his varsity career. His older brother, Chase, is KC’s all-time leading scorer with 1,697 points.

“They are two completely different types of players,” KC coach Zach Kepple said. “But both turned out to be great players for Karns City basketball.”

Five players scored in double digits for the Gremlins (13-6). Shane Peters joined Beighley with 18 points while Cole Johnston and Hobie Bartoe scored 12 each and Jacob Callihan contributed 10.

Karns City 13 18 20 24 — 75

North Catholic 73, Central Valley 46 — The Trojans built a 60-24 lead through three quarters in cruising to this win. North Catholic (12-6, 8-2) won for the eighth time in nine games.

Max Hurray paced the Trojans with 18 points while Will Kontul added 13. Tanner Stevenson sank four treys for 12 points to lead Central Valley.

South Fayette 52, Mars 34 — Ryan Ceh and Will Wilson scored 10 points each for the Planets (10-10, 4-4), but Mars strugged offensively in losing for the fifth time in six games. Austen Campbell scored eight points.

Mars hosts Chartiers Valley on Tuesday for Senior Night and the Planets’ final home game of the season.

Hampton 66, Freeport 42 — Gavin Glista scored 16 points to lead the Yellowjackets (5-13, 2-6). Peter Kramer netted 24 points for Hampton.

Freeport travels to Greensburg Salem on Tuesday night.

Sharon 62, Slippery Rock 59 — Josh Book scored 28 points and grabbed 28 rebounds, but the Rockets lost in overtime. Levi Prementine scored 11 points, Max Kovacik and Anderson Franco seven each for Slippery Rock.

Santini Piccirilli scored 17 points to pace Sharon. Lamont Austin contributed 14 and Derek Douglas 13.

Summit Academy 57, St. Joseph 43 — Abdullah Abdirahman led the Knights with 15 points. Abdikadir Hassan added 13 and Kristian Clayton 12.

Anthony Zavolta paced St. Joseph with 24 points, sinking four treys.

Girls Basketball

Union/A-C Valley was outscored 19-2 in the first quarter and went on to drop a 59-39 decision to Clarion-Limestone. Maddy Dehart led the Falcon Knights with 14 points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Kya Wetzel had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists. Schwabanbauer led three C-L players in double figures with 15 points.
