Kitchen fire fought in Slippery Rock Township apartments Tuesday
A kitchen fire at The Heights at Slippery Rock apartments left one ground floor residence damaged early Tuesday morning, Feb. 13, according to officials.
Ryan Hanchosky, chief of Slippery Rock Fire Company and Rescue Team, said the call from 100 Woodbridge Drive, Slippery Rock Township, came in around 12:50 a.m. after a resident was attempting to start a meal.
“The tenant was heating up oil to cook something. He put the pot on the stove, turned it on and went upstairs to take a shower,” he said.
The tenant was alerted to the fire by smoke detectors, and came downstairs to see fire had spread to a microwave situated above the stove and nearby cabinets.
Hanchosky said only a few residents from nearby apartments evacuated, and the fire crew was able to contain the fire to the kitchen and extinguish it by 1:04 a.m.
“It was a fairly easy fire,” he said. “We went in with a hand line and knocked it down real fast.”
Only the kitchen was damaged during the blaze, Hanchosky added.
“It could have been a lot worse,” he said. “We were able to get in there, and get it knocked down pretty quickly.”
Crews remained on scene ventilating smoke once the fire was out and were on scene a total of 45 minutes, Hanchosky said.
Harrisville Volunteer Fire Company, Unionville Volunteer Fire Company, Butler City Bureau of Fire, Pine Township Volunteer Fire Company, Grove City Volunteer Fire Department and Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department also responded to the scene.
