Mars approves plans for LEFCON press box, discusses scoreboard advertisements
ADAMS TWP — Board directors at Mars Area School District approved plans for the construction of a new press box at LEFCON Field at a meeting Tuesday, Feb. 13.
The next step in the project is for the plans, designed at no cost by architectural firm Draw Collective, to be presented for approval to township supervisors on Wednesday, said Elizabeth McMahon, assistant superintendent, after the meeting.
The board hasn’t hired a construction crew for the project, and the cost of the project is presently unknown. McMahon said she is hopeful the costs will largely be covered by donations, similarly to a new scoreboard at the field that will be implemented at no cost to the district thanks to a donation by community member Jim Lefcakis.
Lefcakis recently donated the first half the funds for a new scoreboard in the amount of $17,625, and has signed a letter of commitment to donate the second half with the completion of the project, McMahon said.
Tuesday evening, board directors also discussed advertising for the scoreboard. They decided a sponsor would pay $3,000 a year for a spot on the scoreboard. Signing a three-year term would cost $2,500 a year.
After the meeting, superintendent Mark Gross said he hopes the scoreboard will be up by the spring and the press box be in use this summer.
Board directors also accepted a $234,665 quote from Bur Mac Commercial Roofing for the installation of a new roof on the high school’s mathematics wing.
The need to replace the roof is urgent, Gross said after the meeting.
“It’s in desperate need of repair,” he said.
He said he hopes installation can start within the month.
