Marion Township to apply for playground grant

MARION TWP — Supervisors agreed to apply for a parks and recreation grant from the county board of commissioners at a meeting Monday, Feb. 12, to pay for an additional piece of equipment for the township’s newly installed playground at 2373 West Sunbury Road.

The maximum amount to apply for is $7,500, township secretary Michele Burd said after the meeting. The township would match the funds.

The township has not decided on the amount to request. The grant application is due Feb. 22, Burd said.

During the meeting, Gary Quigley, owner of Kozy Rest Campground, suggested supervisors consider using grant funds to purchase a gaga ball pit, which he said is popular with children. He likened the game to “modern-day dodge ball.”

The inside of the octagonal pit can be floored with turf or sand, Quigley said.

“Let’s look into it,” supervisor chairman Jason McBride said.

The township playground was installed in December, McBride said after the meeting, and currently has a jungle gym and swing set.

On Monday evening, supervisors also approved a $300 donation to the Community Easter event that will be held at the community park on March 30.
