The cat found beaten in Butler earlier this week has returned home to its owner and is recovering from its injuries, officials said Friday, Feb. 16.

The 14-year-old pet is being administered pain medication for the injuries she suffered Sunday, Feb. 11, according to Deborah Urmann, humane officer for Frankie’s Friends Cat Rescue in New Kensington.

“(The cat) had really bad bruising and swelling,” she said. “She went home Wednesday.”

According to the Butler County Humane Society, the cat was beaten and thrown in an alley around 3 p.m. Sunday near the Honey Bear gas station on East Jefferson Street.

“The cat is doing OK,” said Cari Ciancio, humane society executive director. “She had some X-rays, and some additional medical issues were found.”

Becky Morrow, medical director and president of Frankie’s Friends, said she treated the cat Tuesday, and found the cat had no broken bones.

“It’s terrible,” she said of the situation. “I had to be the meanie and touch her in the places that hurt.”

Part of Morrow’s job is examining pets for investigative purposes, she said, and this involved shaving the cat and having radiographs and X-rays done.

“I feel like she will recover,” Morrow said of the cat. “It’s going to take some time because of the injuries.”

The investigation is complicated by where the pet was found, according to Urmann.

“I’d hoped it’d be in an area where there would be a Ring camera,” she said. “If somebody knows something, if they come forward, that would be wonderful.”

Urmann said the cat was an indoor and outdoor cat that lived with a Butler resident.

“She was extremely friendly, which put her at the mercy of this monster,” she said.

Should a tip come in or the perpetrator be identified, Urmann said she would be filing charges.

“If I could find out who this person is, they’d be charged with aggravated cruelty,” she said.
