Grist House to open new taproom at Freedom Farms
Grist House Craft Brewing, based in Millvale, Allegheny County, is expanding its footprint up north to Butler as it will be opening a new taproom at Freedom Farms Farmers Market, 795 Pittsburgh Road.
Tim King, owner and partner of Freedom Farms, said the target date for Grist House to open is March 6.
“We're excited here at Freedom Farms,” King said. “We really like who they are as a company. Their product is to superior anybody in the region.”
Grist House will be taking over the North Country Corn Crib space, which is still operated by North Country Brewing Company out of Slippery Rock.
“I think North Country is looking to get back to their roots and focus on their original pub in Slippery Rock,” King said. “I can't speak on behalf of them, but I think they are just handing the torch off. It was a good relationship.”
King said North Country’s last day of operation at Freedom Farms will be March 3.
According to Grist House marketing specialist Christie Massari, the business will feature around 15 beers on tap and with both indoor and outdoor seating.
“Our bestseller is the Hazedelic Juice Grenade,” Massari said. “It's a mild hazy IPA. Even for beer drinkers that don't like a hoppy beer it is very smooth.”
The venue will serve food from Freedom Farms’ Farm-to-Fork Kitchen with dishes made from scratch such as hamburgers, salads, subs, pizzas and wings.
“A huge seller would be our flatbreads,” King said. “My brother John (King) is the head chef who makes tons of tomato basil flatbreads.”
King said the hours of operation will remain the same, and they will work closely with Grist House so people can order food while they indulge in some drinks.
“The new Grist House Beer Crib will be a welcoming space for all to come and enjoy a delicious handcrafted Grist House beer along with a mouthwatering meal from Freedom Farms’ Farm-to-Fork Kitchen,” Kyle Mientkiewicz, co-owner of Grist House, said.
Massari said Grist House has been in business for 10 years, with the Freedom Farms venue about to become its second taproom aside from its original location at 10 E. Sherman St. in Millvale, where it currently produces its beer.
