Bar sign destroyed after 3 vehicle accidents occur outside McBride Station

Heavy rainfall a factor, according to PennDOT

The sign outside McBride Station Bar and Grill was destroyed Wednesday morning, Feb. 28 after multiple crashes occurred outside the pub, said bar owner Tim Martz.

According to dispatchers, three crashes were reported along Route 8 Wednesday morning. The first crash occurred shortly after 8 a.m., the second at 8:41 a.m. and the third at 9:11 in the same area. No injuries were reported in the crashes, dispatchers said.

The state Department of Transportation said a total of five vehicles were involved in the three separate incidents.

Martz said the bar sign was “totally demolished” after a northbound truck hydroplaned and crossed lanes.

While he was not at the building at the time of the incidents, Martz said a friend informed him of the damage to the sign, which he said will need to be replaced.

A barrier made of roller ties was also broken, Martz said. He said the barrier was placed to stop people from crashing into the building, and said the barrier was light enough that it would not injure drivers.

“It’s a disaster,” he said, noting that “surprisingly,” the building was not hit.

Martz said repairs to the building are still underway from a crash in June where a truck drove into the walls of the bar.

According to PennDOT, pooling water from heavy rainfall were factors in each crash, but reports indicate other factors were also at play. The organization stated that while drainage systems were “fully operational,” they “were overwhelmed by the amount of runoff water from the roadway and hillsides.”

A crew was sent to investigate calls about pooling water on the roadway, PennDOT stated. They removed water from the roadway as well as debris that had deposited on the inlet.

Dispatchers said Penn Township police and fire department responded to the crashes.
