C. Philip Cressman Jr.

C. Philip Cressman Jr., 83, was born to Charles and Anna Cressman on March 27, 1940, in Philadelphia, and died in Roanoke, Va., on Friday, Feb. 9, 2024.

He graduated from Parkville High School in Baltimore, Md., and Grove City College in Grove City, Pa. He was an airman with the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. Phil married Linda Ruth McDeavitt in Prospect, Pa., where they lived while he finished college before moving to Gap, Pa., where they both taught school in Intercourse, Pa.

They welcomed a daughter and a son into the family and were foster parents to several children. The family moved to South Jersey, where Phil opened a hearing aid business in Margate, N.J. In 1989, Phil and Linda moved to Smith Mountain Lake in Union Hall, Va., where he started Cressman Log Homes.

Phil had been an active member of St. John Lutheran Church in Roanoke, Va., where he served on the church council and was frequently a cantor for the service and loved singing in the choir. He was a handyman around the house and his hobbies were restoring antique boats and cars and spending time on Smith Mountain Lake.

He was predeceased by his wife, Linda Cressman. He is survived by his sisters, Judy Monsma of Stow, Ohio, and Lois King of Lake Placid, Fla.; daughter, Cindy Collins of Salisbury, Md.; son, Chip Cressman of Roanoke, Va.; grandchildren, Kaylyn and Lauren; and five nieces and nephews.

He surely will be missed, but he would truly want us to celebrate his life — to laugh and remember the good times, and to be grateful for everything we have.
