Robert Smith
Robert J. “Bob” Smith, 77, of Kittanning, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, at ACMH in Kittanning.
He was born on May 13, 1946, in Butler, to Dale and Lucille (Hinterlang) Smith.
After graduating in 1964 from Butler High School, Bob proudly served in the Navy on the USS Independence aircraft carrier during the Vietnam War. His service was marked by notable achievements, including being awarded several medals, notably the Antarctica Service Medal. During his time in Antarctica, he had the honor of placing the Pennsylvania flag on the continent. Bob's dedication and service to his country were widely recognized.
Following his military service, Bob became a successful businessman in Kittanning. He also was actively involved in various fraternal organizations in both Kittanning and Butler, as well as the Old Antarctica Explorers Club and known as a Shellback. Throughout his life, Bob was admired by his family and friends for his strong work ethic and commitment to his community.
Bob was a devoted father, grandfather, loyal brother, proud uncle, loving nephew and caring cousin.
His presence will be deeply missed and his memory will forever be held close by his wife, Linda Pierce Smith; sons, Troy Robert Smith and Mary Beth Meyers and Josh Pierce Smith and fiancée, Kristen Roofner; grandchildren, Markus and Shane Eaton, Gavin Brant and Cameron and Emerson Smith; brothers, John Smith and Mark Smith; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Janice Groschen and husband, Steve, and Karen Williams and husband, Rob.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Tanya J. Smith-Eaton; and a sister, Sally Ann Bulger.
The family extends deep gratitude to those who cared for Bob in recent months including the hospitals, Veterans Hospital, Veterans Services, Dr. Ramzi F. Khalil and Suze Boros, CRNP.
SMITH — A funeral Mass for Robert J. “Bob” Smith, who died Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2024, will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, St. Mary of the Assumption Church, 821 Herman Road, Butler. Interment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery beside the church, with military honors by the American Legion Butler County Honor Guard.
Memorial contributions may be made in Robert’s memory to the American Heart Association, Spina Bifida Association and the Disabled American Veterans.
