3 county wrestlers still alive for gold
Three Butler County wrestlers remain in contention for a state championship.
At the Giant Center in Hershey, Butler’s Santino Sloboda and Ana Malovich and Knoch’s Miranda Lajevic each won their lone bout on Thursday.
In the girls tournament, Malovich knocked Crestwood’s Rachel Shoemaker from the 118-pound championship bracket, pinning her with 31 seconds left in the second period.
Malovich had earned a reversal early in the second period before winning by fall.
Lajevic, a junior competing at 100 pounds, took care of Moshannon Valley’s Autumn Shoff by fall late in the second period. The former broke a scoreless tie with a pair of near-fall points prior to the pin.
After receiving a bye into the Round of 16 in the Class 3A boys tournament, Sloboda made quick work of Meadville’s Ben Fuller at 114 pounds, tallying three takedowns in a 12-0 major decision.
Butler’s Kase Chopp (133 pounds) and Seneca Valley’s Connor Smith (121) both fell to the consolation bracket.
Chopp defeated Sun Valley’s Brecken Strickland, 11-4, before losing a 17-5 major decision to Nazareth’s Tahir Parkins.
Smith earned an 11-2 major decision over Pennridge’s Cole Coffin before dropping an 11-1 major decision to Bethlehem Catholic’s Keanu Dillard.
On the girls side, Butler’s Anastasia Manchester and SV’s Hannah Hornick suffered first-round pins — to Garnet Valley’s Jessica Ayala and Cumberland Valley’s Myah Mulgrew, respectively — and will be in Friday’s consolation bracket.
Following are Friday’s scheduled bouts involving Butler County’s seven wrestlers competing at the PIAA Championships in Hershey.
