Officials identify man killed in 20-vehicle crash on Interstate 80
A New York man was killed in a crash involving more than 20 vehicles on the Emlenton Bridge in Richland Township, Clarion County, early Tuesday, March 19, according to officials.
Joga Singh, 35, who was a passenger in a commercial vehicle, died in the crash, which was reported at about 12:30 a.m., according to Clarion County Coroner Dan Shingledecker.
Singh died of blunt force trauma in the crash, and his manner of death was determined to be accidental, Shingledecker said. Officials said Singh was ejected from the sleeper cab.
The crash involved multiple tractor-trailers and affected traffic throughout Tuesday, prompting Allegheny-Clarion Valley School District to delay the start of classes by two hours in the morning and post about anticipated delays in students’ commute home late Tuesday afternoon.
“The confined nature of the crash (between the high concrete barriers of the bridge) along with the overall size and severity of this incident made it particularly challenging,” Emlenton Fire Department said in a Facebook post Tuesday, which indicated the number of vehicles involved in the crash.
The pileup happened near mile marker 44 westbound on Interstate 80, according to a news release from state police.
State police said Wednesday the crash occurred as weather-related conditions on the bridge caused a driver to lose control of their passenger vehicle. Additional commercial and passenger vehicles were unable to stop and avoid the disabled vehicle, police said, causing multiple collisions.
State police said more information will become available as multiple agencies work to identify the vehicles and occupants involved.
