Sen. Casey introduces Infant Formula Made in America Act
On Wednesday, March 20, Sen. Bob Casey, D.-Pa., introduced a bill that aims to boost the production of infant formula in the United States and safeguard against future shortages.
The Infant Formula Made in America Act would create a tax credit to support new or smaller producers of infant formula in the U.S.
Its introduction comes after Reckitt/Mead Johnson, a major producer of infant formula, recalled over 675,000 cans of Nutramigen Powder, a specialty powder for infants with allergies earlier this year.
An even larger infant formula recall swept the nation in 2022, when an Abbott Labs manufacturing plant in Sturgis, Michigan shut down due to possible bacterial contamination.
“The Infant Formula Made in America Act is a vital step in expanding the supply chain, investing in American manufacturers, and keeping infant formula on the shelves,” Casey said in a news release.
