Energy secretary invited to town hall on Butler Works plant
U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16th, has invited U.S. Department of Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm to attend his upcoming town hall to explain the department's proposed rule that threatens 1,300 jobs at the Cleveland-Cliffs Butler Works plant.
The proposed rule would undermine Grain Oriented Electrical Steel (GOES) — produced domestically only at Butler Works — leading Kelly to organize a town hall for April 1 at Butler County Community College.
In a letter sent to the Department of Energy, Kelly called on Granholm to “answer to the community that this rule proposal would so greatly impact,” according to a Monday, March 25, news release from Kelly’s office.
Kelly has also invited Butler County commissioners as well as administrators of Cleveland-Cliffs and the United Auto Workers union to the town hall meeting.
The town hall is open to the public and will begin at 6 p.m. April 1 at Founders Hall, 107 College Drive, Butler Township. Granholm has not yet accepted the invitation.
