State police close investigation into ATM robbery, say no money stolen

State police have closed the investigation into an alleged ATM robbery Sunday, March 24, at PNC Bank near Clearview Mall after it was discovered no money was stolen.

The review of surveillance footage at the Center Township bank and additional interviews revealed the reporting party “misunderstood the intentions of the alleged actor,” documents showed.

The incident occurred around 9:10 p.m. Sunday as a man was depositing cash into the ATM.

According to trooper Bertha Cazy, public information officer for Troop D, the person who approached the ATM was “minding his own business.”

“(The alleged victim) saw someone approaching him and took off,” she said. “(The other man) was probably there to deposit money as well. They don’t know each other.”

A police report released Monday indicated a dark-colored sedan approached the man’s vehicle from behind and a passenger exited the vehicle with an unknown object in his hand. The man who was depositing money fled the scene, according to police. The initial report further stated that the driver of the sedan pulled forward and took the money that was being deposited.
