SRU’s Gillott shuts out Lakers

Sophomore pitcher Gage Gillott allowed just two hits in a complete-game shutout in Slippery Rock University’s 2-0 PSAC baseball win at Mercyhurst on Friday.

Gillott struck out six and walked two while improving to 4-1 on the season.

The Rock plated both runs in the top of the first inning. Michael Kitko contributed an RBI-groundout and Noah Ross hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the second tally.

Joey Purcell had two of SRU’s four hits, including a double.

The Rock’s win came in the first game of a doubleheader. The Lakers rebounded with a 7-1 victory in Game 2.

Mercyhurst (6-11, 3-3) broke a scoreless tie with six runs in the third frame against SRU starter and losing pitcher Parker Hogge. He allowed six runs on seven hits, though only two of the runs were earned due to an error behind him.

The Rock was held to three hits in the defeat. Pinch-hitter Caelan Bender’s sacrifice fly in the seventh accounted for the team’s lone run.

SRU (12-5, 4-2) hosts Mercyhurst for two games on Saturday.
