Giant Eagle opens corporate headquarters in Cranberry Township
CRANBERRY TWP — Giant Eagle officially opened the first corporate headquarters it has had in more than four years with a ribbon-cutting Thursday, April 11.
County and township officials joined representatives from the grocery and convenience store chain for the opening of the 100,000-square-foot company seat on Cranberry Woods Drive.
“It’s been 212 weeks since we had a corporate headquarters at Giant Eagle,” said CEO Bill Artman.
Giant Eagle’s 400 corporate employees are working in the building that was previously occupied by FedEx. The $11.5-billion company employs a total of 36,000 people. All of the company’s interests, which include Giant Eagle grocery stores, Market District stores, pharmacies and GetGo convenience stores, had different satellite offices, but will now have a central hub, he said.
The site was chosen because of its proximity to the turnpike and Interstate 79 and its modern amenities, Artman said.
“We’ve been here for 93 years and we’re proud of that … Our goal is to be here another 93 years,” he said.
On behalf of Giant Eagle, Artman presented a $25,000 donation to the township for its Powell Farm project. The 71-acre farm was gifted to the township, which is planning to use it for agriculture education, community farming and recreation.
In addition to becoming a member of the community, he said Giant Eagle prioritizes its employees and customers.
“Looking out for our 36,000 team members is my No. 1 responsibility … Thinking like our customer, not for our customers, is critically important,” Artman said.
He said customers are facing a lot of economic pressures, including where to spend their money, and the company wants them to feel good about shopping at Giant Eagle.
A company official read a proclamation from Gov. Josh Shapiro welcoming the company to the township.
Township supervisor John Skorupan said the township is happy to add Giant Eagle to host of other corporations based here, and thanked the company for the donation to the farm.
Giant Eagle’s previous headquarters was in RIDC O'Hara Industrial Park in Allegheny County.
After the brief ceremony, Artman said inflation is a major concern among customers.
“We’d like to see it come down, but it’s not happening fast enough,” Artman said.
He said it is frustrating when optimistic signs about the economy are followed by reports of stagnation.
