A portion of Evans City Road near its intersection with West Main Street closed Friday morning, April 12, as a sinkhole was repaired, according to officials.

The road remained closed as of 4:30 p.m. Friday, according to a report from PennDOT.

PennDOT crews were on scene with equipment to assess the damage, which is right along the border between Jackson Township and Evans City.

According to Christina Gibbs, community relations director for PennDOT, there was no word on when the road would reopen.

“At this point, we’re unsure of the cause,” she said. “We have crews on scene exploring the area to find the cause. The drainage in the area is functioning as it should be, so they’re looking into other potential issues that may have caused the sinkhole.”

“Our goal is to reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so, but there is currently no estimated time,” she said. “Safety is our first priority, so until we deem it safe for motorists, the roadway will remain closed.”

Motorists who would normally travel along Evans City Road were redirected to a detour on side streets.

The road closure led to a severe disruption for businesses along Evans City Road, including Evans City Beer. Hunter Matthews, who works at the liquor store, was able to get to work through a back road, but had almost no business on Friday morning.

“I haven’t had any customers today. The road’s shut off completely,” said Matthews. “They’re letting us in and out for deliveries and stuff like that, but they’re not letting any customers come in. We have no business other than our deliveries.”
