Man killed in I-79 crash Saturday morning

A man died after crashing his vehicle into a tree Saturday morning, April 13, on Interstate 79 in Muddy Creek Township, according to officials.

Robert Lepak, 51, of Erie, was identified Monday by William Young III, Butler County Coroner. Lepak’s cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma and his manner of death deemed an accident, Young said.

According to Trooper Bertha Cazy, public information officer with Troop D, Lepak was traveling south on the interstate in a Jeep Patriot when he crashed into a tree near mile marker 94. Lepak was the single occupant of the vehicle, Cazy said.

Police were dispatched to the scene around 9 a.m., and the southbound lanes were closed from 9:40 a.m. to 1:23 p.m., according to Cazy.

Portersville Muddy Creek Township and Prospect volunteer fire departments and Harmony Fire District also responded to the scene of the crash.
