7 county athletes among scholar-athlete award winners
PITTSBURGH — Seven of the 20 recipients of the 2024 WPIAL James Collins Scholar-Athlete Award winners are from Butler County.
There were 146 nominees overall with 20 — 10 male, 10 female — selected for the award.
Butler County athletes receiving the award are Isaiah Clerkley and Lihini Ranaweera of Seneca Valley, Drew Griffith of Butler, Addison Girdwood of Mars, Lindsey Greb of Knoch, Alayna Rocco of North Catholic and Sydney Selker of Freeport.
Here is a synopsis of those award winners:
Isaiah Clerkley (Seneca Valley): Carrtying a 5.112 grade point average, Isaiah is a four-year letterwinner and captain of the Raiders’ swimming and diving team his senior year. He won back-to-back WPIAL gold medals in the 1-meter dive as a junior and senior, claiming the state title this year. He owns numerous diving records and was the 2022 pommel horse state champion in gymnastics. He plans to pursue a degree in computer science and compete as a member of Penn State’s diving team.
Addison Girdwood (Mars): Carrying a 4.683 grade point average, Addison is a four-year letterwinner in girls soccer and a team captain as a senior. She helped lead the team to consecutive WPIAL and PIAA championships and four consecutive section crowns. She served as president of the National Honor Society and Enrichment Club. She plans to pursue a biomedical engineering and medicine degree in college.
Lindsey Greb (Knoch): Carrying a 4.42 grade point average, Lindsey is a four-year letterwinner and captain of the Knights girls tennis team. She won three consecutive WPIAL doubles titles and helped lead the team to three WPIAL crowns. She also won a PIAA title in doubles. She served as Student Council and Class Cabinet vice president and leader of Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She plans to pursue a degree in biology and pre-medicine and play tennis at Saint Francis University.
Drew Griffith (Butler): Carrying a 4.425 grade point average, Drew collected nine letters between cross country, swimming & diving, and track & field. He was captain of the cross country and track and field teams. He won back-to-back WPIAL cross country gold medals, WPIAL titles in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters. He is two-time Pennsylvania Gatorade Cross Country Athlete of the Year and has won national championships in cross country, indoor and outdoor track. He served as treasurer of the National Honor Society. He plans to purse a degree in mechanical or aerospace engineering while running cross country and track at Notre Dame.
Lihini Ranaweera (Seneca Valley): Carrying a 5.452 grade point average, Lihini was a four-year letterwinner of the Raiders girls golf team and captain her senior year. She won silver and bronze medals at the WPIAL Championships and helped lead the team to a runner-up finish at the WPIAL Team Championships. She became the first SV girls golfer to capture section medalist honors in three successive seasons. She plans to pursue a degree in computer science with a concentration in artificial intelligence in college.
Alayna Rocco (North Catholic): Carrying a 4.36 grade point average, Alayna is a four-year letterwinner for the Trojanettes in basketball and a captain her senior year. She helped the team win three straight WPIAL titles and was WPIAL 4A Player of the Year as a junior. She has volunteered her time to St. Agnes’ Fish Fry, Christmas Overseas Soldier Care Boxes, the Diocesan Basketball Championships as a concession worker and as a volunteer coach at the Little Trojans Basketball Camp. She plans to pursue a degree in likely actuarial science or economics and play basketball at Harvard.
Sydney Selker (Freeport): Carrying a 4.304 grade point average, Sydney lettered for four years in softball and volleyball. She has served as captain of both teams. She helped lead the volleyball team to consecutive WPIAL championships and a PIAA title. She volunteered her time for Restore Freeport Park, Freeport Volleyball Elementary Camp, Freeport Library and the Freeport International Baseball Invitational. She plans to pursue a degree in marketing and play softball at the University of Akron.
