1 hospitalized after boat capsizes Sunday in Lake Arthur
A man was taken to Butler Memorial Hospital after his sailboat capsized on Lake Arthur in Moraine State Park on Sunday, April 21, according to officials.
Dustin Drew, park manager, said weather may have factored into the incident, which occurred on the main portion of the lake in Worth Township just before 4 p.m.
“My guess is it was wind-related,” he said. “It was windy here through the weekend.”
The man was picked up by other boaters who were on the lake. Drew said they took him to Watts Bay, where he was then transported to the hospital by Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team’s ambulance.
The water was around 59 degrees this weekend, according to Drew. He said these temperatures could result in someone experiencing hypothermia.
“Water cools the body much quicker then the air does,” he said. “Definitely hypothermia would have been a concern.”
No other injuries were recorded from the incident, Drew said, and park rangers were able to recover the boat from the water.
Portersville-Muddy Creek Township Volunteer Fire Department and EMS and Butler County’s Water Rescue Team 300 also were called to the scene.
