2 men killed in separate motorcycle crashes Sunday

Another man under age 30 injured Monday

Two men under age 30 were killed in separate motorcycle crashes in Butler County Sunday, April 28, and another was taken to a Pittsburgh hospital with serious injuries following a crash Monday.

Gabriel Bishop, 22, of Butler, died in a crash Sunday afternoon on Route 422 East between Duffy and Mercer roads in Butler Township. Tyler J. Coon, 29, of Mars, died in a crash on Mars-Evans City Road in Forward Township on Sunday night, according to officials.

Butler Township police said Bishop crashed his motorcycle as he attempted to pass a pickup truck and clipped its rear bumper in a crash reported at 3:08 p.m. Bishop died at the scene.

Deputy coroner Larry Barr said Bishop died of multiple blunt force trauma.

Route 422’s eastbound lanes were closed for about an hour as police investigated. Dispatch reports indicated crews were on scene for more than three hours.

State police said Coon, was thrown from his motorcycle after striking the rear of a Jeep Patriot driven by Chad A. Meier, 22, of Mars, at 9:17 p.m.

Coon’s cause of death was determined to be blunt force trauma to the head and chest, according to deputy coroner John Hanovick.

Police said Meier was traveling north on Mars-Evans City Road and missed a turn into a Dollar General parking lot. Police said Meier turned right onto May Lane to make a U-turn and travel south on Mars-Evans City Road.

At that time, police said Coon was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle south on Mars-Evans City Road at a high rate of speed and struck the back of Meier’s vehicle.

Police said Coon was thrown from the motorcycle during the collision and later pronounced dead on scene.

Meier and his passenger were uninjured, police said.

County dispatch reports show crews were on scene for more than four hours following the crash.

In the Mars-Evans City Road crash, Adams Township police, Evans City Area Volunteer Fire Departments, and Quality Ambulance Service responded to the scene in addition to state police.

In the Route 422 crash, Butler Township Volunteer Fire District, Butler City Bureau of Fire, Butler Ambulance Service and state police responded to the scene in addition to Butler Township police.

Monday crash

On Monday, another man in his 20s was involved in a motorcycle crash and taken to a Pittsburgh hospital by medical helicopter.

The 27-year-old suffered serious injuries in the crash, which happened just before 11:30 a.m. on Franklin Street at its intersection with Main Street in Slippery Rock, according to Slippery Rock Borough police.

Slippery Rock Police Chief Terry Fedokovitz said the crash occurred when the motorcyclist rear-ended a passenger vehicle. The motorcycle then traveled into the opposite lane and hit another vehicle, he said.

“He was flown to a Pittsburgh hospital with serious injuries,” he said.

The man was taken by ambulance to Morrow Field House on Slippery Rock University’s campus, which was established as the landing zone for the medical helicopter.

An ambulance also was requested to the scene to evaluate the driver of one of the vehicles involved, Fedokovitz said, but that person was not transported.

Those responding to the Monday crash included Slippery Rock Volunteer Fire Company and Rescue Team and ambulance and Superior EMS assisting Slippery Rock police on scene.

Community support

A GoFundMe account has been started by Sherri Mckibbin on behalf of Bishop’s family.
