Connoquenessing Township seeking grant for new municipal building
CONNOQUENESSING TWP — The township is considering a new municipal building and is seeking a Local Share Amount grant from the state to fund its planning, design and construction.
The new building would replace the one currently located on Township Drive. According to township solicitor Andrew Menchyk, the township has outgrown its current building, which opened in the early 1970s.
“The current building doesn’t meet the needs of the township in terms of meeting capacity,” Menchyk said.
The LSA is a grant offered by Pennsylvania’s Department of Community and Economic Development, which distributes gaming revenues to support public projects. Grant amounts can vary between $25,000 and $1 million.
The township submitted their application for this grant just before the deadline in late November. Township engineer William Braun of Senate Engineering revealed during a supervisors meeting on Wednesday the township would be willing to provide about $137,000 to match the $1 million grant amount.
Braun said it may be a while before the township finds out whether or not their application was a success.
“They’re not planning on announcing the grant until September,” Braun said. “So they also want us to change the project timeline because of that.”
According to the minutes of a special meeting from Nov. 20, Braun said the new building would be compliant with standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act and have a conference room, a storage room and offices for the sewer authority, and it would be built closer to Route 68. The old building would likely be used for maintenance purposes.
