Commissioners confirm dek hockey rink here to stay in Butler Twp
Butler Dek Hockey players can keep their sticks ready as township commissioners confirmed the rink in Butler Township Park is here to stay.
“Nothing is gong to happen to that hockey rink,” said commissioner James Lokhaiser during the Monday, May 6 commissioners meeting.
The township addressed concerns about rumors circulating that the dek hockey rink would be replaced with additional pickleball courts on their Facebook on Thursday.
“This rumor is completely false and not based in fact,” the post states. “We’re unsure where this information originated, from but it’s not happening.”
The social media blast did not stop Butler resident Rodney Zaliponi from asking the commissioners about the status of the dek hockey rink.
“What’s the status on dek hockey?” asked Zaliponi. “There’s a lot of rumors going around.”
Lokhaiser not only dispelled the rumors but alluded to the possibility of the township building an additional rink in the future.
“We’ve actually talked about possibly buying another dek hockey,” he said. “That dek hockey rink is not regulation size, so we cannot hold tournaments because it doesn’t meet the standards.”
Even if a new rink were to be built, Lokhaiser assured Zaliponi nothing would happen to the current hockey area.
The commissioners voted unanimously to put two vehicles — a police city van and a pickup — up for bid.
According to Lokhaiser, residents interested in placing a bid can fill out the necessary paperwork at the township building on 290 S. Duffy Road.
The vehicles will be awarded to the highest bidder and the funds will go back to the township’s general fund, said Lokhaiser.
