ADAMS TWP — Since it entered varsity play over a decade ago, Mars boys lacrosse has elevated itself to not only a perennial champion in the WPIAL, but a consistent contender for a state championship.

Attaining such prowess requires that players gain a true passion for the sport and are dedicated to improving their skills.

Enzo Grieco is one of the latest examples and he recently vaulted himself to the top of a very impressive list.

In Wednesday's win over Shaler, Grieco tallied five goals and an assist, giving him 335 career points, a program record. The total includes 253 goals and 82 assists.

"It's surreal," said Enzo, a senior attackman. "Getting the record was thrilling for me, but I know it wouldn't be possible without the people around me. I'm lucky to have great teammates and coaches."

The most recent former Mars players who Enzo passed on his way to the top include Mike Doyle (330 points), Wesley Scurci (297), Anthony Grieco (293) and Austin Cote (279).

Kyle Savage is the Planets' offensive coordinator. His first year with the team was Enzo's sophomore season, when the latter had a breakout campaign with 80 goals to help Mars become the first lacrosse team from western Pennsylvania to win a state title.

"It started for Enzo when he was growing up," Savage said. "His dad coached him in Mars' youth program, which is really strong.

"As a sophomore, he found himself on the finishing end of a lot of plays, but became more of a ball carrier last year and he blossomed into the player we see today, one that looks to facilitate first and score second."

Enzo has 59 goals and 20 assists this season.

"He's had a lot thrown at him from opposing defenses," said Savage. "Some teams play zone against him, others try to put a short stick on him and keep him from getting the ball, but he ends up with it anyway. We've seen pretty much everything under the sun from defenses, but he's such an intuitive lacrosse player, it's a moot point.

"He's 6-foot-4, so when he gets off the bus, everyone recognizes him."

Grieco will play in college at Penn State, but hopes to help Mars (12-2) climb to the top one more time before he leaves. The Planets have won seven straight WPIAL Class 2A crowns and played in the last three state championship games. They won it all in 2022 and were runner-up in 2021 and last year.

He has no shortage of help in that regard. Teammate Jack McKenzie recently surpassed 800 faceoff wins in his career. Ian Coulter has reached 100 career goals, defenseman Cole Yoshioka became the first Mars player to cause 100 turnovers in his career and goalie Luke Spreng has been stout in net.

"We don't talk about it much, but getting back and winning a state title, it pushes us like nothing else," said Enzo. "We want to be at our best at the end of the season."
