Chicora changes clean up day out of necessity

Chicora is still having a cleanup day this spring where residents can dispose of large-scale items, but for the first time, they will have to bring their trash to the dumpster.

The cleanup day is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, May 11, and Chicora Councilwoman Mary Kay Summerville said dumpsters will be in the lot at the Chicora Borough Maintenance Garage at 109 Water St., for drop-offs.

Serafine Hauling used to bring its dumpster around the borough for residents to use for disposals, but Summerville said this year the company’s personnel will be on site to supervise loading of items into the dumpsters, which are being rented by the borough. She said this is because Serafine Hauling sold the dumpster the company used to haul around the borough.

“Usually people would just put their stuff out, and (they) would take it, but this year, that's not going to work,” Summerville said. “We were unable to find anybody to go around and pick it up.”

Summerville said the dumpster can take all the items it could accommodate in previous years — but still no electronic items, appliances or hazardous materials. Summerville said although the cleanup day has changed, borough administrators still wanted to give “everyone the opportunity to get rid of their stuff.”

She also emphasized the cleanup day is meant only for residents of Chicora.

“We do it every year, but this is going to be a little different for us,” Summerville said.
