Rain held off on May 10, 2008, for members of the then-largest graduating class of Slippery Rock University to receive their degrees at the N. Kerr Thompson Stadium with enough room for everyone.

In total, 1,277 people received degrees that day, and their friends and family who turned out to see them collect their diplomas were able to fit in the bleachers of the stadium, with some in the overflow section.

The keynote speaker was Helen Sobehart, a 1972 graduate of the university who was set to become president of Cardinal Stritch University in Milwaukee.

Travis Sarver, who graduated with a degree in health and physical education, planned to work at Butler Senior High School after graduating.

“I like to be physically active in my job plus help to make a difference with kids,” Sarver said.
