Feeding the hungry through the mail
People can help fight hunger this weekend by simply leaving a food item by their mailbox on Saturday, May 11.
Stamp Out Hunger is held every second Saturday in May by the U.S. Post Office.
During the event, mail carriers pick up food left by mailboxes to be donated to a local food bank. Food donated within Butler County goes to a local food pantry for later distribution.
Led by letter carriers represented by the National Association of Letter Carriers, with help from rural letter carriers, other postal employees and volunteers, the drive has delivered more than 1.82 billion pounds of food the past 30 years.
Nearly 1,500 association branches in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam and the Virgin Islands are involved in the effort, according to a news release from the Postal Service.
