Adams Township man charged with attempted homicide after shooting of wife, self

A man is facing an attempted homicide charge after police said he shot at his wife multiple times while she was in the shower and then turned the gun on himself in an Adams Township home Saturday, May 11.

Two teenagers who were in the Presidential Lane home at the time were able to break open the locked bathroom door and stop Jay R. Palmer, 48, from firing at his wife, Holly Palmer, again, according township police.

Jay Palmer is in critical condition from a single gunshot wound to his chest, police said Saturday. Charging documents filed Monday, May 13, show Holly Palmer suffered gunshot wounds to the abdomen and knee, as well as some injuries from broken glass.

Police said Palmer and his wife were taken to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh following the shooting. Police said Holly Palmer received surgery for her injuries and was in stable condition as of Saturday.

Jay Palmer was charged with felonies attempted criminal homicide and aggravated assault and misdemeanors child endangerment and reckless endangerment. A warrant was filed for his arrest.

According to the affidavit, the shooting occurred after a few discussions about the couple’s potential divorce.

Holly Palmer told police that before 3:30 p.m. Saturday, she was preparing to shower when she noticed her husband was in the bedroom and appeared to be hiding something under a mattress.

Police said that as she was showering in an adjoining bathroom, Jay Palmer came in and opened fire with a semiautomatic pistol. According to documents, the first shot broke the glass shower door.

Palmer fired three to four shots as his wife was “trapped in the shower,” according to reports.

Police said two teenagers were able to break open the bathroom door and take Jay Palmer to the ground while his wife escaped from the shower.

Jay Palmer then shot himself in the chest, according to police. One teen was able to get the gun and place it in a different room, police said.

Officers said the gun was found ready to fire on a nightstand in another bedroom.

Police said a teen called 911 and got towels to slow the bleeding from the Palmers’ injuries.

Palmer’s preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
