A bear and three cubs were spotted near a residence on Valencia Road in Forward Township on Tuesday morning, the township said in a Facebook post alerting residents to beware.

The sighting was reported to the township by resident Dave Elliott, who said his family spotted the bears roaming outside his home around 7:30 a.m. According to Elliott, his wife was took the family’s dog outside, but the dog ran back inside the home. Elliott’s wife then spotted the bear and the damage it caused near their property.

“(It) knocked down four of my bird feeders,” Elliott said. “I had a plastic feeder that was filled with mealworms. Now, it has bite marks in it.”

Elliott says that the bears ran off shortly after being spotted and headed west. He notified both the township and the Pennsylvania Game Commission as soon as possible, and the township placed a notice of the sighting on their Facebook page just before 9 a.m.

According to township manager Tom Hartwig, Elliott’s is the only reported sighting of the bears, and no injuries have been reported.
