Public invited to help improve North Country Trail
The North Country Trail Association will hold events to improve the trail, which is parallel to Lake Arthur to the north of Moraine State Park in Butler County.
A Water Bar Building Workshop will be held from 4 to 6:30 p.m. May 29. Those who made a reservation to attend will meet at the Mount Union Road pull off.
Lauren Kennedy Little, regional trail coordinator for Ohio and Pennsylvania, will lead construction of two to four water bars above the recently improved stairs.
The water bars will help reduce erosion and preserve the staircase, which is on a steep slope.
Reservations for the workshop are available by emailing but@northcountrytrail.org.
National Trails Day will be celebrated at North Country Trail with a maintenance hike from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 1.
Participants will meet at 9 a.m. under the Route 528 Bridge at Moraine State Park.
Picking up fallen limbs, cutting back multiflora roses and blazing the trail will be among the work completed on the hike.
Those planning to attend can bring gloves and loppers if possible and should dress for the weather, wear sturdy shoes, and bring water and a snack.
Potential participants can register for the hike by emailing their name and telephone number to but@northcountrytrail.org.
The trail association’s Butler chapter is seeking a trail maintenance coordinator who would assess potential projects needed along the trail, create project plans to complete them, schedule trail maintenance days, send emails to volunteers, and communicate with other association leaders.
Candidates must be certified in CPR and first aid, have a chain saw certification, and be a member of the trail association.
Those interested in the volunteer position can email but@northcountrytrail.org. for more information.
