Mars players get all-section honors

ADAMS TWP — Several members of Mars Area High School’s varsity baseball and softball teams have received all-section honors.

Infielder Laura Craska and outfielder Abby Robinson have been named first team All-Section 3-5A in softball. Infielder Stephanie Esswein, outfielder Tessa Simoni and pitcher Gabrielle Rapport made second team.

Designated hitter Charlie Bickel and infielder Jake Johnson made All-Section 3-5A first team in baseball. Infielder Luke Goodworth made second team.

Pirates announce 2024 HOF selections

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates have announced that Barry Bonds, Jim Leyland and Manny Sanguillen will comprise the 2024 class of inductees into the ball club’s Hall of Fame.

They will be honored during part of a pre-game ceremony on the field prior to the Aug. 24 game against the Cincinnati Reds.

Bonds is the only Pirate to top 175 home runs and 200 stolen bases. He is the only two-time National League MVP in team history. Leyland managed the Pirates for 11 seasons, ranks third in all-time Pirate wins with 851 and led the team to three consecutive division titles. Sanguillen was a two-time World Series champion catcher for the Pirates and ranks third in club history with 1,037 games caught.

Butler, Seneca Valley get section honors

Butler senior pitcher Kelsey Ogin and junior catcher Lily Vicari have been named first team All-Section 1-6A this season,.

Seneca Valley junior pitcher Lexie Hames and junior infielder Bella Gross earned first team honors as well.
