Moraine, McConnells Mill release schedule of programs for June

With the official coming of summer, Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks have announced their events for June.

Saturday, June 1, is National Trails Day, and McConnells Mill is hosting a naturalist-led hike on North Country Trail to celebrate. The hike starts at 10 a.m. from the Point Parking Lot. Participants should note North Country Trail is one of the more difficult ones in the park, featuring uneven terrain and steep slopes. Hikers should be in good physical shape and bring water and a packed lunch.

Kayak beginners can enjoy a guided paddle on Lake Arthur on June 6 from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn basic kayak tips and will get the chance to see wildlife at the Hidden River portion of McDanel’s Launch. This event is open to participants age 12 and up, with those under 12 required to be accompanied by an adult. All participants are required to wear a life jacket.

Moraine will host a “living history” demonstration at the restored Muddy Creek Oil Well on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., giving visitors a chance to see an antique Bessemer engine pumping oil.

Artists can take part in Watercolor Wednesday at the McDanel’s Boat Launch area at Moraine’s North Shore from 10 a.m. to noon June 12. Supplies will be provided. Preregistration is required.

McConnells Mill is hosting a geology-themed guided hike in the Slippery Rock Gorge on June 12 from 6 to 8 p.m. Hikers will meet at the Kildoo Picnic Area.

The McConnells Mill park naturalist is hosting a crayfishing event on June 14 from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Hell’s Hollow area of the park.

Moraine State Park is holding a papermaking lesson June 15 from 10 a.m. to noon at Pleasant Valley Beach. Participants will learn how to make their own paper and will take home their own creations.

There will be a second guided paddle at Moraine on June 20 from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. A limited number of kayaks will be available for those who don’t bring their own. Preregistration is required.

There are two DiscoverE day camps at Moraine State Park this month: Hide-n-Seekers for ages 4 to 5, and Outdoors Explorers for ages 6 to 8. The Hide-n-Seekers camp takes place June 21 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and the Outdoors Explorers camp takes place June 28 from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Preregistration is required for both.

Moraine is hosting a Project Learning Tree educator workshop June 25 in the State Park Region 2 Conference Room. Project Learning Tree is a program intended for kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers.

The park naturalist at Moraine is holding two reptile education events in late June: Venomous Snakes of Pa. on June 29 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Salamander Safari on June 30 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Both events will start from the park’s north shore, and put participants face-to-face with real reptiles.
