Water, heat issues result in 2nd alarm in Marion Township fire
Water supply and hot weather resulted in a second alarm for firefighters to respond to a Friday night fire that destroyed a garage and an adjacent storage building in Marion Township.
The cause of the fire at 524 Harrisville Road remains under investigation. No injuries were reported.
The fire destroyed a metal storage building, but firefighters managed to save half of the contents of an adjacent one-car garage, said Robert Hairhoger, chief of the township’s volunteer fire company. A truck and an SUV that were parked outside also were saved, he said.
A hydrant on Boyers Road produced a low volume of water, and hot weather took a toll on firefighters, so a second alarm was sent for tanker trucks and additional crew, Hairhoger said.
“One of our biggest problems was the water supply from the town’s water system,” Hairhoger said.
The initial alarm went out at 7:25 p.m., and the fire was declared under control at 8:14 p.m., he said. Firefighters cleared the scene just after 10 p.m.
Dispatched were the Eau Claire, Harrisville, West Sunbury, North Washington, Petrolia, Bruin, Slippery Rock and Unionville volunteer fire departments from Butler County; the Pine Township, Grove City and Springfield Township volunteer fire departments from Mercer County; the Clintonville Volunteer Fire Department from Venango County; and the Parker City Volunteer Fire Department from Clarion County, he said.
State police fire marshals were called to determine the cause of the fire, he said.
