Man accused of removing, forging check from Cranberry Township mailbox
A Pittsburgh man was accused of swiping five checks from a mailbox in Cranberry Township, according to charges filed Thursday, May 30.
Francis J. Packard, 56, cashed a forged check on May 15, one day after a woman placed it in her mailbox to be sent out, police said.
Packard is facing a charge of felony access device fraud. His preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
Police said on May 13, a woman placed five checks in her mailbox. At 3:41 a.m. May 14, police said surveillance footage showed a person opening and going through the mailbox.
The next day, the woman discovered the check was cashed for $2,285 by Packard, though the check was not originally made out to him, police said.
Security footage of the man who cashed the check at Dollar Bank in Braddock Hills and his driver’s license number were provided to police.
Police said they were able to use the information to identify and charge Packard.
