Moraine, McConnells Mill release updated schedule of programs for June
Moraine and McConnells Mill state parks have released an updated schedule of events for the month of June.
Thursday — Kayak beginners can enjoy a guided paddle on Lake Arthur from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants will learn basic kayak tips and will get the chance to see wildlife at the Hidden River portion of McDanel’s Launch. This event is open to participants age 12 and older, with those under 12 required to be accompanied by an adult. All participants are required to wear a life jacket.
Saturday — A volunteer workday will take place at the Pleasant Valley Trail at Moraine State Park. From 10 a.m. to noon, volunteers are invited to help Moraine’s trail crew remove invasive plants and debris from the trail and improve the hiking surface. Some tools will be provided. Meet at the Pleasant Valley trail head on the park’s south shore, a quarter-mile past the park office.
Saturday — Moraine will host a “living history” demonstration at the restored Muddy Creek Oil Well from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., giving visitors a chance to see an antique Bessemer engine pumping oil.
June 12 — Artists can take part in Watercolor Wednesday at the McDanel’s Boat Launch area at Moraine’s North Shore from 10 a.m. to noon. Supplies will be provided. Preregistration is required.
June 15 — Moraine State Park is holding a papermaking lesson from 10 a.m. to noon at Pleasant Valley Beach. Participants will learn how to make their own paper and will take home their own creations.
June 20 — There will be a guided paddle at Moraine from 8:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. A limited number of kayaks will be available for those who don’t bring their own. Preregistration is required.
June 21 and 28 — There are two DiscoverE day camps at Moraine this month: Hide-n-Seekers for ages 4 to 5, and Outdoors Explorers for ages 6 to 8. The Hide-n-Seekers camp takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 21 and the Outdoors Explorers camp will be from 7:30 to 10 p.m. June 28. Preregistration is required for both.
June 25 — Moraine is hosting a Project Learning Tree educator workshop starting at 8:30 a.m. in the State Park Region 2 Conference Room. Project Learning Tree is a program intended for kindergarten through eighth-grade teachers.
June 29 and 30 — The park naturalist at Moraine is holding two reptile education events in late June: Venomous Snakes of Pennsylvania from 1 to 2:30 p.m. June 29 and Salamander Safari from 1 to 3 p.m. June 30. Both events will start from the park’s north shore and put participants face-to-face with real reptiles.
June 12 — McConnells Mill is hosting a geology-themed guided hike in the Slippery Rock Gorge from 6 to 8 p.m. Hikers will meet at the Kildoo Picnic Area.
June 14 — McConnells Mill is offering a guided hike of the Breakneck Falls trail which teaches hikers about Pennsylvania’s state tree, the eastern hemlock. The hike takes place from 3 to 5 p.m., with hikers meeting at the Breakneck Falls parking lot.
June 14 — The McConnells Mill park naturalist is hosting a crayfishing event from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at the Hell’s Hollow area of the park.
June 16 — McConnells Mill is giving visitors the opportunity to sample the history of local breadmaking at the historic gristmill. Visitors can operate a hand grinder in the same way that the old mill was used to grind wheat into flour. The “From Grain to Bread“ program is open 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
