An event recognizing Juneteenth is planned for Wednesday, June 19, at the YWCA in Butler.

“Uniting in Poetry & Song: A Juneteenth Celebration,” will feature food, fellowship and music from 6 to 8 p.m. in the YWCA’s Preston Room, 120 W. Cunningham St.

The event is intended to bring people from local religious and other community organizations together to learn about and celebrate Juneteenth, a national holiday. Throughout the evening, the event will include a potluck dinner, poetry readings and group singing.

Juneteenth is a day that commemorates the end of slavery in the United States after the Civil War. A Juneteenth singalong event was held in 2023 at the YWCA Butler. This year, poetry is being added with readings from two poets from the region.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a dish to share and join others in singing from the Justice Choir Songbook.
