First Petrolia Community Day kicks off July 27
The Petrolia Community Day was created with the hopes to bring the community together and make some new memories that will last a lifetime.
Following last year’s 150th anniversary celebration of the borough, preparations began in March to bring the community together again through an afternoon of fun and fellowship through the first Petrolia Community Day.
The event is scheduled for 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, July 27, at Petrolia Park.
“It’s actually a good way to get people together,” planning committee member Linda Volaric said.
“We had our open of our capsule last summer and a lot of people enjoyed it, and we’re sort of doing it for the community,” Robin McGinnis, another member of the planning committee, said. “We just don’t do much out in northern Butler County. We have a committee that we used last year, and it’s why we’re doing it.”
Robin McGinnis, Volaric, Kristie Christie, Pam Osmer, Ann Warren, Tom Bullman, Doug Sheakley, Darlene Angert and Pam Deal are members of last year’s planning committee. They are planning the community day as well.
The group is bringing back crowd favorites from the anniversary celebration, including a car cruise, raffle and a disc jockey. A live concert is planned with country music singer Gary Burk III.
Holly Frontier, an energy company with a Petrolia-based facility, is helping to fund some of the event.
“People don’t have a lot of money these days. It’s really nice of them,” McGinnis said.
The Petrolia Fire Company and a Boy Scout troop will be volunteering at the event. They will be serving food and drinks, such as funnel cakes and soda. A company from Greenville will be providing different kinds of teas for the event. These organizations helped the Petrolia 150th Anniversary celebration last year, as well as this year’s event.
The car cruise will take place from 3 to 6 p.m.
New to the celebration will be a 4 p.m. duck race. People can buy plastic ducks for $5 to compete. If 200 ducks are sold, a cash prize of $500 will go to the winner.
“We’re hoping it turns out good,” McGinnis said. “A lot of people don’t see each other a lot today. People work, people have children and things. It’s a nice get together.”
Proceeds from the Petrolia Community Day event will go toward funding Petrolia’s Christmas lights display.
