Southern Butler County residents without power after Monday storm
Crews responded to dozens of calls for downed trees and power lines after a storm blew through the county Monday night, June 17, and many residents in southern municipalities were still without power on Tuesday morning.
According to FirstEnergy, the parent company of Penn Power and West Penn Power, 810 customers in Adams Township were reporting outages, along with an additional 205 others in Cranberry Township and more than 80 in Mars at 7:30 a.m. Reports show over 80 customers in West Liberty were also without power at that time.
By 4 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon, the number of customers in Adams Township had ballooned to 1,253, along with 710 in Cranberry Township.
By 5 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, the number of customers in Adams Township without power fell back to 819, along with 282 in Cranberry, 95 in Mars, 55 in Valencia Borough, and 38 in Jackson Township.
Most of the outages were in the service area of Penn Power, which is in the southwestern part of Butler County.
“The majority of Penn Power customers without electric service should have their power restored by Wednesday night at 11 p.m.,” said Todd Meyers, a representative from FirstEnergy.
The cause listed for most of the outages on FirstEnergy’s outage tracker is “Pending Investigation”, but other outages list “Tree Damage” and “Equipment Damage” as the cause.
“Tree damage is a leading cause of power outages for us,” Meyers said. “High winds blowing off-right-of-way trees and branches into our equipment, bringing down power lines and damaging poles.”
