Black bears spotted in Butler Township

Helen Spryn was eating breakfast Thursday, June 13, on the back porch of her home on Old Plank Road in Butler Township when she heard and then saw a black bear lumber up the stairs from the side of her yard.

Spryn said she moved back when she saw the bear, which then ran to hide behind a bush. Over the next 45 minutes, two cubs would come to accompany the mother bear while she roamed between bird feeders in the yard before taking a dip in a pond.

“She was so close to us, she thankfully didn’t come towards us,” Spryn said. “We went in and I stood in the doorway. She was just interested in lounging in the water.”

The mother bear returned the following night at around 10:45 p.m., Spryn said, again roaming the yard for food. Spryn said she didn’t call 911 to report the bears, but took down some of the bird feeders after their visit to her backyard Thursday.
